This week’s Plant Talk will
be brief because I have a special day to celebrate, so let’s get straight to
the plant discussion.
I chose the Iris to talk
about this week because of its Egyptian history. According to Garden Guides:
“Around 1479 B.C., King Thutmose III of Egypt had conquered Syria where irises
grew in great profusion. Being a gardener as well as a warrior king, Thutmose
ensured that irises should be immortalized in sculptures at the Temple of Amon
at Karnak symbolizing the renewal of life, as well as in the gardens of Egypt.”
I knew that the Egyptians
liked to immortalize handsome figures because they made this impressive
sculpture of me. But I digress.

Getting back to the Iris,
as always it was the Greeks who gave the plant the name we use today, although
thankfully no one had to die for this one.
Quoting Garden Guides again:
“Iris was the Greek messenger of the gods who was said to have golden
wings and to travel on a rainbow (like my friend Jenn). “Iris” means “rainbow”
in Greek, fittingly representing the many colors of the Iris flower.
Okay, now that we’re done
with the history of the Iris plant, it’s time to celebrate “Dance Like A
Chicken Day.” I’m not exactly sure how a chicken dances. I’ve never seen any of my chickens doing a
samba or a foxtrot or even hip hopping around the coop. I tried playing some
dance numbers on my accordion, but they just continued to strut and cluck as
usual.
So if you have any
suggestions on how to Dance Like A Chicken, please let me know.

Dear Stretch,
ReplyDeletei am one of your BIGGEST fans and I want to tell you that anytime I see you, I just smile and feel happier. Thank you. By the way, do you have any relatives or friends that need a home because I would be happy adopt one of them. Please let me know. thank you and love and hugs, Laurie
Laurie, I really appreciate your devotion and want you to know that I always love hearing from you. I do have a couple relatives who hang around my "rooms" on the bookshelves here, but they're not quite the same size as me and don't have my impeccably good looks. But I promise you that if I ever come across another cousin like me who's looking for a home, I will be sure and direct him your way!
